Zaima Rahman Named Legal Officer at UNGA President's Office

Zaima Rahman, daughter of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has been appointed a legal officer at the Office of the President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where she will handle the office's legal work. The appointment puts a Bangladeshi barrister inside the Assembly presidency's office while Bangladesh holds the presidency itself: Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, elected 2 June, assumed the 81st session's presidency on 8 September.

Office lineup

The office's roster, carried by Dhaka's outlets from the UN's official team page, lists 40 officials from 29 nationalities. Six of them are Bangladeshi, Zaima included. The five others: diplomat Abdul Alim as Deputy Chief of Cabinet, Moazzem Hossain as adviser and administrative assistant, Mafizul Islam as senior adviser for information, artificial intelligence and strategic foresight, Zakir Ahmed as senior adviser for sustainable development and climate change, and Md Rafiqul Alam Molla as senior adviser on least developed countries. The Dhaka Tribune notes the UN's team page lists Zaima as a legal officer representing Bangladesh.

Credentials and lineage

Zaima is the only daughter of Tarique Rahman and Dr Zubaida Rahman, and the granddaughter of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia. She studied law at Queen Mary University of London, completed the Bar-at-Law in the UK, and passed the first stage of the Bangladesh Bar Council enrolment examination in June 2026. UNB describes her as a barrister and legal and policy professional with experience in the UK and Bangladesh. The Dhaka Tribune adds a dry institutional fact: the Assembly president is not a direct UN employee, and the home country typically bears the president's salary, allowances and housing.
